Why Skin Changes After 40 (And What Your Skin May Need Now)

As the founder of You’re Too Beautiful, I created this space because I believe skincare should celebrate women at every stage of life.

Like many women, I started noticing changes in my own skin as I got older. My skin didn’t feel the same as it did in my 20s and 30s, and I wanted to understand why those changes were happening and what my skin needed now.

Through my own experience and learning more about skincare, I discovered that these changes are a normal part of aging — and something many women experience as they move through their 40s and beyond.

I wanted to share what I’ve learned, not as a skincare expert, but as a woman who understands what it feels like to look in the mirror and wonder, “When did my skin start doing that?”

Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought, “When did my skin start doing that?”

Maybe your skin feels drier than it used to. Maybe your makeup doesn’t sit the same way anymore. Maybe you’re noticing fine lines or changes in texture that weren’t there before.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. I was going through these changes in my own skin too, and I know many other women are experiencing the same thing.

As we get older, our skin changes — and that’s a completely normal part of life.

Our skin has been with us through every smile, every laugh, every season, and every experience. Over time, we begin to see those experiences reflected in our skin — the laugh lines from years of smiling, and the effects of sun exposure from all the moments spent enjoying life.

But just like the rest of our body, our skin needs different care as we move through different stages of life.

When I started learning more about skincare, I realized that many of the changes women notice after 40 are connected to things happening beneath the surface — like changes in hormones, collagen production, and how well our skin holds onto moisture.

Why Does Skin Change After 40?

One of the biggest changes is that our skin naturally produces less collagen as we age.

Collagen is a protein that helps support the structure of our skin. As collagen production slows, many women begin to notice changes like fine lines, less firmness, and changes in skin texture.

But collagen isn’t the only factor.

Hormones Can Affect Your Skin Too

Many women experience skin changes during their 40s because of hormonal shifts, especially during peri-menopause and menopause.

I know I did.

Changes in estrogen levels can affect the skin’s ability to maintain moisture and support collagen. This is why some women notice their skin becoming drier, more sensitive, or needing more hydration than it did before.

Your favorite skincare products from your 20s may not give your skin the same results anymore — and that’s okay.

Your skin has changed, so your routine may need to change with it.

Why Hydration Becomes So Important

One of the biggest changes I noticed in my own skin after turning 40 was how much drier it became. My skin used to be oily, I never expected that I would have a problem with hydration.

Healthy-looking skin starts with supporting your skin’s moisture barrier. When your skin is properly hydrated, it can appear smoother, softer, and more radiant.

This is why ingredients that support hydration have become such an important part of skincare routines for mature skin.

What Are Peptides and Why Are They Popular in Skincare?

One ingredient you may have heard more about recently is peptides.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that are often used in skincare products designed to support the appearance of healthier, smoother-looking skin.

They are popular because they work well alongside other skincare ingredients and can be part of a simple, consistent routine.

Skincare After 40 Isn’t About Looking Younger

I think one of the biggest changes we can make as women is changing the way we think about aging.

Taking care of your skin doesn’t mean you’re trying to look like someone else or erase every sign of getting older.

It means you’re taking time for yourself.

It means you’re caring for the skin you have today.

Your skin tells a story. The goal isn’t perfection — it’s helping your skin look healthy, hydrated, and glowing at every stage of life.

At You’re Too Beautiful, I believe beauty doesn’t have an expiration date.

Your skincare routine should celebrate who you are now.

Because you’re already beautiful. 🤍
